Charles Christopher Hill was born in 1948, in Greensburg, Pennsylvania. He attended East Los Angeles College earning an Associates degree in 1969 and went onto the University of California, Irvine, where he graduated in 1973 with a Master of Fine Art degree.
A lifelong resident of California, Hill is recognized for his decades of exhibitions in France, Italy, Switzerland, and Germany. It is the extensive travels in Europe that have influenced all bodies of his work from the early sewn paper work to the Kuba and cave paintings.
Early sewn works, emphasizing the fragility of thought and memory, were the direct result of visits to small museums throughout Europe dedicated to showing the fragile and neglected work of long forgotten artists. It was the decay of these objects that became overwhelmingly influential in the physicality of his work from early 1972 until 1990.
A National Endowment for the Arts grant and Paris residency in 1993 enabled Hill to concentrate his energies on painting and refine his impressions of Kuba textiles from Zaire. The resulting Paris paintings have been a consistent theme for the last 17 years. The refining of these images resulted in the exhibition “Dapper” at the 212 Gallery in Aspen, Colorado in 2008.
A fortuitous trip to the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain led to the discovery of the painted caves of Cantabria and Asturias. Paintings inspired by the cave of La Pasiega in Puente Viesgo were shown and cataloged by the Rocket Gallery, London, in the exhibition “Cave” 2002.
Charles Christopher Hill is represented in private and corporate collections in Europe and the United States and has been exhibited in the art fairs of Basil, Bologna, Brussels, Paris, and Berlin, as well as galleries in New York, across the U.S. and Europe. His work is in the permanent collections of museums worldwide including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of New York, The Museum of Modern Art, the Albright Knox Museum, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
