Artist Bio

Caio Fonseca, born 1959, is an American artist based in both his native New York and in Pietrasanta, Italy. In 1978 he went to Barcelona where he studied and painted until 1983. He moved to Pietrasanta (Lucca) in 1985 where he worked until 1989. Then, after two years in Paris, he returned to New York and now divides his time between Pietrasanta and his studio in Manhattan on East Fifth Street, from which his paintings derive their titles. Fonseca’s works are held in numerous public and private collections in Europe and the United States, including: MoMA, NY; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY; The Whitney Museum of American Art, NY; The Hirschhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington D.C.; and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, among many others. Retrospectives of his work have been held at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. and in Valencia, Spain at the Institut Valenciá de Arte Modern (IVAM).

For his first exhibition with 212GALLERY, Fonseca has created a new body of work, using a freshly invented visual language. This work represents a bold departure in both spirit and technique from the work for which Fonseca is best known. Gone are the over-painting, ground form relationships, and embellishments present in his work of the last ten years.

Here, irreducible forms in precise architecture belie their apparent rigor. One form through its placement creates the form beside it, which in turn creates the next, activating both the vertical and horizontal forces in a uniquely processional movement. Working in both large-scale and intimate formats, these new paintings collectively announce a bold and distilled vision.
